 January 25, 2007

Dear Neighbors,

I hope your 2007 is off to a great start.  There are quite a few events around Lumberton including an update on the Township Committee re-organization, the reassessment, a Parental Responsibility Ordinance, a school crackdown on illegal parking, notices for security alarm owners, recognition by eBay, and an updated Community Calendar.

Township Committee Re-Organization:  The Township Committee held its annual re-organization meeting on January 2nd.  Jim Conway was sworn into a three year term on Township Committee. Mike Mansdoerfer was sworn into a second three year term.  I was selected as Mayor, and Mike Mansdoerfer was selected as Deputy Mayor.

Reassessment Update:   The Tax Assessor has extended the schedule for appointments with residents to review the assessments through February 14th.  The Township has also petitioned the Burlington County Tax Board for an extension to the filing deadline the Tax Assessments February 27th.  The purpose of the extension is to allow time for an independent Tax Assessor to do an audit of the township wide reassessment.  Once the audit is complete, the Tax Assessor will submit the assessment to the County Board of Taxation for approval.  Once the County Board of Taxation approves the assessment, the Tax Assessor will mail all property owners their final assessment notices.  The final Assessment notices are expected to be mailed in March.  Property owners who chose to appeal, will have 45 days from the receipt of their assessment notice to appeal the assessment to the County Tax Board.  The new assessments will take effect in the August 2007 tax bill.

Parental Responsibility Ordinance:   On January 16th, The Lumberton Township Committee introduced a Parental Responsibility Ordinance.  The ordinance is a tool used by some towns to help identify minors at risk of gangs and force parents into taking a more active role in their children's lives.  Under the language of the ordinance, parents and guardians of minors involved in two or more crimes against people or property in an 18 month period of time can be charged and face up to a $1,000 fine.  The Township Committee has scheduled the public hearing and adoption for February 20th.

Schools Cracking Down on Illegal Parking:  On January 22nd, the superintendent sent a letter to parents informing them that the Lumberton School District asked the Lumberton Police to start writing tickets for illegal parking at the schools in order to protect the safety of students.  The schools cited an incident where a contractor was blocked in by other vehicles double parked at a recent concert.  Some parents expressed frustration because they feel there is a shortage of parking spaces during big events at the schools such as the various concerts and Back to School Night.

False Alarms:  The Lumberton Police Department is reaching out to residents and businesses with security alarms to help reduce the high volume of false alarms.  Last year, the police responded to over 1,200 security alarms.  Less than 1% of the alarms were legitimate alarms. The remaining 99% were false alarms.  Responding to the false alarms consumed over 1,100 hours of police services resulting in higher costs to the taxpayer and less patrol time.  The Police Department is encouraging owners of alarms to:

  • Have their alarms serviced on a regular basis to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Instruct family members and anyone that may enter their property in an emergency on the proper procedure to arm/disarm the alarms.
  • Ensure that their alarms can not be inadvertently activated by their pets.

For more information, residents and business owner can contact the Lumberton Police at (609) 267-1111.

Lumberton Voted Number #1 Community on eBay:  In November, eBay took a Census of eBay users.  Based on their calculations leveled for population by zip code, Lumberton accounted for the most activity on their online auction site. In recognition, eBay plans to donate $10,000 to a local charity.  For more information, visit http://www2.ebay.com/aw/core/200611.shtml#2006-11-29162358.  There is no word from eBay on what charity they will award and when they will make the presentation.
