Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a good winter.  As spring begins, there are some updates on issues like the Reassessment, eBay, the Parental Responsibility Ordinance and the new recreation facilities.  There are also a few new items of interest such as a change in location for the recycling center, some new businesses coming to town, the formation of a new Garden Club and a local resident getting recognized as a regional business leader.  Plus, the Community Calendar has been updated with some of the Spring events around Lumberton.

Reassessment Update:  The formal Reassessment process has been completed.  Final Reassessment Notices were mailed to all property owners the first week of March.  Residents who wish to challenge their new assessed value have 45 days from the post marked date on the Final Assessment notice to file an appeal with the County Tax Board.  The Township has posted a link to the County Tax Board information page on the Township's web site.  The final tax rate will be set in June when the state certifies the budgets of the four governmental agencies with taxing authority - the Lumberton Township Committee, the Lumberton Board of Education, the Rancocas Valley Regional High School Board of Education and the Burlington County Board of Freeholders.  All four agencies are working on their budgets.  The two school systems require voter approval of their budget and special questions on the April 17 School Elections.  The new tax assessments will take effect in the August 1st tax payment.

eBay is Coming to Lumberton:  Lumberton was selected as the most active community on eBay in November 2006.  Representatives from eBay will be coming to Lumberton in the late Spring timeframe to recognize Lumberton and make a $10,000 donation to the Burlington County Animal Shelter.  The local charity was selected by eBay community members from Lumberton from a list of local charities selected by eBay.   Arrangements for the eBay event are still being made.  When more information becomes available, I'll be sure to share it.

Parental Responsibility Ordinance:   On February 20th, the Lumberton Township Committee passed a Parental Responsibility Ordinance.  The ordinance is designed to hold parents responsible for their minor children who have committed repeat criminal offences.  The ordinance specifically states that parents and legal guardians of minors involved in two or more crimes against people or property within any 18 month period of time can be charged and face up to a $1,000 fine.  The ordinance also allows the judge to mandate family counseling.

New Recreation Facilities Opening:  The Township will hold two ribbon cutting ceremonies to officially open the new community playground and the BMX dirt bicycle course.  The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground will be Saturday, May 5th at 11:00 AM.  The ceremony for the BMX course will be Saturday, June 2nd at 11:00 AM. The Township will provide more information as the events get closer.

Recycling Lot Moving:  The Township received grants to move the recycling lot off of Municipal Drive over to Chestnut Street up from the Walther School.  The Township is relocating the lot because the recycling lot often becomes littered and unsightly.  The new location is further away from residential areas and less visible to residents.  The move also includes some landscaping to  make the site less visible from the road and security cameras to monitor the site.  The Township expects to complete the relocation in the late Spring or early Summer.

New Businesses Coming to Lumberton:

  • Philly Soft Pretzel Factory:  The Land Development Board approved the application for Philly Soft Pretzel Factory to open a store on Eayrestown Road across from Commerce Bank.  The opening date is still to be determined.
  • Steve and Barry's:  Steve and Barry's University Sportswear  will open a new store in the Lumberton Evergreen Shopping Center (old Super G store).  Steve and Barry's is a rapidly growing national chain.  The store is expected to open on April 4th.

Garden Club:  Lumberton has a new Garden Club who are working to approve the appearance of Lumberton.  The Garden Club is asking residents and local businesses to participate in their "Donate a Tree Program".  The club's goal is to get 10 donations of $150 to install and care for 10 large shade trees around the new Community playground.  The Garden Club is also working on another project to spruce up the landscaping around the municipal building.  They are asking for donations to help purchase the trees, shrubs and flowers for the project.  If you are interested in donating to either project or for more information, you can contact the Township Administrator at 267-3217.

Local Resident Recognized by Philadelphia Business Community:  Matthew MacMichael, a Lumberton resident and CEO of the Haddon Financial Group in Moorestown, will be recognized by the Philadelphia Business Journal as one of Top 40 Under 40 business people who are proven performers in their industries and communities.  For the full list of awardees and more information, visit   http://philadelphia.bizjournals.com/philadelphia/event/3101.
