Dear Neighbors,

I hope you are having an enjoyable spring.  There are a lot of little things going on around town.  So please take a few minutes to catch up on events.

Main Street Traffic Calming Update:  The speed limit changes proposed by the Burlington County Freeholders will go into effect this summer.  The  New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) decided not to act on the recommendation  of the county.  By not acting, the NJDOT is allowing the recommendations of the Burlington County Board of Freeholders to take effect.  The 30 mile per hour section will be extended from Creek Road to the Village Green.  The 35 miles per hour section will be extended further south out of the village to a point 680 feet south of Bella Road,  and the speed limit will be lowered from 45 to 40 miles per hour from the Village Green to the Post Office.

No Jake Braking!:  The Lumberton Township Committee passed an ordinance prohibiting Jake or "Engine Braking".  Jake or Engine Braking is a technique for slowing down tractor trailers by using engine exhaust to rapidly stop the engine and force the vehicle to slow without applying the brake pedal.  It saves wear and tear on the rigs brakes.  When not muffled, it also makes a real loud noise.  Residents along Main Street brought this complaint to the township last year.  Under the ordinance passed this year, a truck driver can be fined if he is found to be applying Engine Brakes that are not muffled and do not present an immediate threat to public safety.

Bobby's Run Traffic Calming Update:   This year, the township received a $125,000 grant to do a traffic calming study along and around Bobby's Run Boulevard, the Bobby's Run School complex and other parts of town.  The firm doing the study has met with school officials, a task force of residents from town, the police department, and the county engineer's office.  The consultant is expected to provide a report in June detailing recommendations for reducing congestion around the school complex, providing bicycle routes and reducing speed along Bobby's Run Boulevard.  Once the Bobby's Run phase of the study is complete, the consulting firm will start working on traffic flow and calming issues elsewhere in town.

Lumberton Joins the Lawsuit:  The Lumberton Board of Education joined a lawsuit started by the Medford Township School District against the New Jersey Department of Education.  The lawsuit seeks to increase the amount of state aid provided to growing school districts.  The suit seeks to increase the amount of state funding provided to Lumberton Public Schools.  The plaintiffs contends that when the state changed its funding formula in 2001, it disproportionately and unfairly effected growing, suburban communities like Lumberton while providing significantly more funding per student to poorer, urban districts.  The Lumberton Board of Education resolution points out that the state funding per student in Lumberton has dropped from $4,275.98 to $3,821.96 per student over the past four years.

Another Open Space Acquisition:  Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Richter of Main Street generously donated a wooded 3/4 acre lot on Main Street adjacent to the Village Green to the township.  The lot had the capacity for one additional home.  The township plans to combine the lot with the Village Green and preserve it as open space.  So far this year, 204 acres of Open Space have been preserved in Lumberton.

Community Calendar:  Here are some community events coming up in the next few weeks:

  • Lumberton Historical Society Yard Sale:  The Lumberton Historical Society will be holding its annual yard sale on Saturday, June 4th from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Village Green.  If you are interested in selling some of your items, the cost is $10 for virtually unlimited space.  You just have to bring your own table.  To sign up for space, contact Elaine Fillius at 267-4354.
  • Blood Drive:  The Community Blood Council of New Jersey is sponsoring a blood drive on Monday, June 6th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Retro Fitness, 1613 Rte. 38 West.  For more information, please contact the receptionist at 265-8938.
  • Pride In Lumberton Day:  The township is sponsoring a Pride in Lumberton Day on June 18th from 8:00-12:00 PM.  The goal is to get volunteers and teams of volunteers to help pick up litter and spruce up some needed areas of town.  All volunteers will be provided refreshments and a free t-shirt.  For more information or to sign up, contact Ed Snow at 267-3217 x3113 or esnow@lumbertontwp.com.
  • Scrap Book Fundraiser:   There will be a Scrap Booking fundraiser to benefit the Lumberton Fire Department and help pay for the flood damage sustained to the Lumberton Fire Department building.  The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 25, 2005 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Cinnaminson Fire Department located at 1900 Taylors Lane in Cinnaminson.  If you are interested, you can contact Ruth Pincus at 518-7880 or rpincus@scrappingandsuch.com for more information.
  • Farm Fair:  Contrary to what was reported in Lumberton E-News last spring, the Burlington County Farm Fair will be back in Lumberton in 2005.  The fair dates are set for July 20-23rd.  The fair will remain in Lumberton because the new county site in Springfield is not ready, and there are no guarantees that it will be ready in 2006 either.  The Township Committee and the Farm Fair Directors agreed to allow parking on the old dump next to the Walther School so long as the Farm Fair Directors puts up a bond to cover any damages to the landfill surface and related expenses that the township may incur by allowing parking on the old dump.  This parking arrangement will enable the fair to provide adequate parking without having to use buses.  Almost all of the land that had been used for parking in past years is now either developed or is being developed.

Super Wal-Mart:  The Wal-Mart's site plan was not heard by the Land Use Board on April 13th as planned.  A special session is scheduled for May 31st at 7:30 PM in the Municipal Building.

Free Mulch:  The township is giving away free mulch.  Last year, the township purchased a large Tub Grinder to grind down organic waste to reduce the increasing costs of waste disposal.  One of the bi-products is a big pile of fresh mulch that would otherwise end up as solid waste in the landfill.  The mulch is located in the recycling lot across from the municipal building.  The much is available for pick up 24x7.  Take as much as you like.  The folks at Public Works will make more.
