Dear Neighbors,
I hope you had a safe and enjoyable
summer. As we approach Fall, there are a
few new items as well as some updates on
continuing events. As usual, the
Community
Calendar has been updated with upcoming
events for the Fall.
Safe Routes
to School: Lumberton was awarded a
$226,000 grant from the NJ Department of
Transportation to create safe routes to the
Ashbrook School and develop programs to
promote walking and biking safely to
school. Lumberton was one of only a handful of communities in the state to
receive funding under the Safe Routes to
School program. The grant money will be
used to construct sidewalks and/or bike paths
down Municipal Drive and crosswalks on
Municipal Drive.
Super
Wal-Mart: Wal-Mart is back in front
of the Land Development Board with its
application to expand into a Super
Wal-Mart. A local resident and a local
business sued
Lumberton Township and Wal-Mart claiming that
they were denied due process in the approval
process. The township agreed to re-hear
the case. The hearing is expect to take
a several meetings including a couple of special
meetings. The next Land
Development Board meeting is scheduled for
Thursday, September 20th at 7:30 PM at the
Municipal Building.
Creek
Clearing: On August 15th, the
Burlington County Road Department with the
help of the Lumberton Public Works Department
cleared two obstructed areas on the Rancocas
Creek in Lumberton. The county has
documented about 60 snags or obstructions in
the creek in Lumberton. The county
started clearing the obstructions that do not
require permits from the State Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) and is working
with the Burlington County Bridge Commission
to get DEP approval on the remainder of the
obstructions. The overwhelming majority
of the creek obstructions in Lumberton require
the approval of DEP to clear. The
project is expected to take many months to
complete.
Rancocas
Valley Special Election: The
Rancocas Valley Regional School District Board
of Education scheduled a special election for
Tuesday, September 25th to ask voters to
approve the issuance of $6.8 million in bonds
(debt). The bonds will be used to
replace the roof, widen the football field and
add artificial turf, build an all weather
track, add two more classrooms, renovate
guidance offices, replace curbs and sidewalks,
repave the parking lot and driveway, and
replace the bleachers in the main gym.
The state will pay 37% of the bond
costs. The RV Board has scheduled a
public information meeting for September 11th
at the Bobby's Run gym.
Township
to Eliminate TAC Board: On September
4th, the Township Committee approved an
ordinance to eliminate the Technical Advisory
Committee (TAC). TAC is used to allow
the Township's professionals to review building plans
before the plans are presented to the Land
Development Board. In the past, it was a
very helpful forum to ensure large site plans
were ready for the Land Development Board to
review. However, with very
few new developments, the Township Committee sees
TAC as an unnecessary step that adds additional
cost to the approval process for smaller
projects. Larger projects will still
have the option of having the Township's
professionals review plans before presenting
them to Land Development Board, but
it will now be voluntary.
Crossing
Guards: For the 2007-08 school year,
the township has added two additional crossing guards
on Bobby's Run Boulevard at the Freeman Park,
and Dimsdale Road at the entrance to the
Bobby's Run School Complex. The existing cross walk has been
moved to Windermere Drive to better serve
residents on the eastern end of Bobby's
Run.
Bella Road:
This fall the township will move and repave
the intersection of Bella and Bridge
Roads. The project was initiated a
couple years ago when residents showed that
the township road encroached on their private
property, but the project was delayed over
disputes with the county over the crowning and
storm water run off. The project will
address the storm water run off problems as
well as the private property encroachment
issue.
